Photographers Gallery -  Alex Prager

Today as a group we visited the Photographers Gallery - founded in Covent Garden as the first public gallery in the Uk devoted to just photography.  This institute have introduced many international figures such as Sebastian Salgado and Nick Knight and many more world famous photographers.

The exhibitions we attended today:

Alex Prager - Face in the Crowd
Fish Murtha Works 1976 to 1991

This exhibitions work includes over 40 photographs including her trademark, large-scaler technicolor photographs as well as her short films. Her work crosses the worlds of art, fashion as well as dark disturbing undercurrents that are themed through her work.

Some of the images that I found most interesting where:

Above is my favourite from the small collection I chose. The photographer has staged the image as a group of spectators Every actor is individually staged seemingly self absorbed in their own world. Each model is staged in a way that captures the viewers attention and forcing the viewer to consider the crowed  individually. For me I am fascinated and drawn to the man seated in the second row, yawning carelessly towards the bow tied popcorn eater. This contrast of action I find laughable yet captivating. For me the brilliance in the photograph on closer examination is the absence of a group dynamic.
